The
Sound Department
In HAWK|STUDIOS, the Sound Department, like the Camera Department is unique from the others in that its members use expensive and delicate equipment to do their jobs. It is for this reason that we have enacted a tiered qualification process to gain access to the equipment.
There are three tiers in our Sound Department, Boom Operator, Production Sound Mixer, and Sound Supervisor. Each tier comes with access to more sophisticated sound equipment, and requires a certain amount of knowledge as well as experience. The first tier (Boom Operator), is the simplest to access, and a requirement to crew in the Sound Department on a HAWK|STUDIOS set. All that is required is to watch a selection of informative videos, and pass a short exam on the information in those videos. This is done to protect the sensitive equipment, but kept simple in order to get people on set as quickly as possible where they can gain practical experience.
Each subsequent tier requires viewing a collection of educational videos and passing a quiz, but adds an experience element of three production days working in the Sound Department in that role. 3 days as a Boom Operator before testing to become a Production Sound Mixer, and 3 days as a Production Sound Mixer prior to testing to become a qualified Sound Supervisor.
All this is explained further in our educational packet "The Sound Department" as well as the video below.
